Collection Instructions
Draw fasting sample before giving the Glucose solution (Glucola). In addition to the specimen being sent to lab: If glucose meter is used in your area, follow your glucose meter procedure. Perform a fasting glucose on the glucose meter as a courtesy draw so procedure may be started.
1. If the glucose meter result is >140 mg/dL (greater than 140 mg/dL) DO NOT proceed with the tolerance. Send the blood sample to laboratory and have them run the
sample STAT. If the lab result is >140 mg/dL notify the ordering physician to determine if the tolerance test should be performed.
2. If fasting glucose is < 140 mg/dl (less than 140mg/dL), give the patient 75 gram glucose load. Patient must ingest the glucola within 5-10 minutes. After patient has completed ingestion, set a timer for 1 hour . A sample must be drawn at each hour mark.
To Proceed with testing:
2. Draw 1hr specimen 1hr after glucola, 2hr specimen 2hrs after glucola and 3hr specimen 3hrs after glucola.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Spin within 1hr. and refrigerate. Gray tubes are stable 24 hours before spinning.

Patient Preparation
Dietary preparation of the patient before testing is at the discretion of the physician. At least 3 days of full diet containing a minimum of 250 g of carbohydrate is recommended.
A minimum of 8 hour fasting is required (unless otherwise noted by the physician.) Patient must be NPO except water from midnight until the time the test is completed. The patient should not exercise or smoke immediately before the the procecure. During the test procedure the patient may not smoke, chew gum, drink coffee, or do excessive exercise during the test. Water intake is encouraged throughout the testing time. The patient should not leave the testing area while the test is performed. If the patient becomes ill or vomits the test must be terminated immediately and the physician must be notified.
