Swab specimens are submitted in bacterial transport medium such as Copan tubes. Sterile specimen containers are acceptable for respiratory secretions, fluids, and urine.

Rejection Criteria

Cause for Rejection: Inadequate labeling, improper collection.

Additional Information

Patients from select locations may meet criteria for screening for the presence of Acinetobacter species. The intent is to prevent nosocomial infections, monitor nosocomial infections, treat patients with these infections, and communicate infection status upon transfer and discharge to continue care and monitor incidence. The cultures are screened only for Acinetobacter species, therefore, no other species of bacteria are reported.
