Collection Instructions
Specimens – refer to collection information for specific site. All specimens must be properly labeled and accompanied by completed Laboratory requisition. The specimen will be divided in the laboratory for fungal, mycobacterial, and routine cultures only if these tests are requested and specimen volume is sufficient. Transport to Clinical Laboratory without delay.

Inadequate labeling; Improper collection; Specimen on the outside of the container; Swab.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Specimens should be transported immediately to the North Campus Laboratory.

NOTE: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation guidelines recommend that culture should only be performed on individuals capable of producing a spontaneously expectorated sputum. Swab will not be accepted for AFB Culture on CF patients. If multiple sputum specimens are ordered, they must be collected at least 8 hours apart.
