1 mL
Minimum Collection Volume
0.5 mL
Collection Instructions
Overlying and adjacent areas must be carefully disinfected to eliminate contamination with indigenous flora. Contamination with normal flora from skin, rectum, vaginal tract, or other body surfaces must be avoided. Ideally, pus or other fluid obtained by needle aspiration through intact skin or mucosal surface which has been cleaned with antiseptic is sent directly to the laboratory in capped syringe (without needle). Sampling of open lesions is enhanced by deep aspiration using a sterile plastic catheter. Curettings of base of an open lesion are optimal. If irrigation is necessary, nonbacteriostatic sterile normal saline may be used. Lower respiratory samples must be obtained by transtracheal percutaneous needle aspiration. Specimens not collected in a Anaerobe transport vial must be transported to the Clinical Laboratory without delay.
Rejection Criteria
Specimen not received in appropriate anaerobic transport tube or appropriately capped syringe; IUDs are not acceptable specimens; Specimens from sites which have indigenous anaerobic flora e.g. bronchoalveolar washing, cervical swab, endotracheal aspirate, Swab
Specimen Storage and Stability
Room temperature
Turn Around Time
Preliminary report at 2 days; Final at 5-7 days.

Alias
Anaerobic Culture; Culture for Anaerobic Organisms;
Ordering Info
Swabs are considered inadequate for collection of anaerobe culture due to small amount of material collected, greater risk for contamination and inhibited release of the organisms from the swab for growth. For these reasons, swabs are no longer acceptable and will be rejected.
EPIC Code
LAB233
Acceptable Collection Container
‘Port-a-cul’ anaerobic transport tube or vial;
or syringe with removed needle and capped with sterile male plug
Patient Preparation
See collection instructions.
Additional Information
Requisition must state specific site of specimen, clinical diagnosis, and time of collection. If an unusual organism is suspected, such as Actinomyces, this information must be specifically noted on the requistion. Susceptibility testing of anaerobic organisms is not routinely performed. Swabs are considered inadequate for collection of anaerobe culture due to small amount of material collected, greater risk for contamination and inhibited release of the organisms from the swab for growth. For these reasons, swabs are no longer acceptable and will be rejected. Optimal specimens are aspirates or tissues.Day(s) and Time(s) Performed
