Specimen Type

Brush from lesion. Bronchial Brushings, Colonic Brushings, Esophageal Brushings, Gastric Brushings, Ureteral Brushing, Urethral Brushings.

Collection Instructions

Roll brush gently over glass slide to cover the area of a dime and fix immediately by spraying with fixative or dropping in container of 95% alcohol. Label bottle with exact body site, 2 patient identifiers (Full Name and DOB and/or MRN is acceptable)and collection date.collection date. Label slide with 2 patient identifiers and specimen source. If more than one slide is used, separate them with a paper clip. Disposable bronchial brushes should be submitted in formalin with sheath removed and brought immediately to the Pathology Department located on the second floor of the hospital. For the diagnosis of infectious processes, a special double-sheathed brush should be sent sterile to the Microbiology Laboratory for culture.

Rejection Criteria

Improper labeling or fixation.

Specimen Storage and Stability

After hours, specimen should be transported immedialtely to the Phlebotomy Dispatch Unit located on the first floor.

Acceptable Collection Container

Fixative container, formalin bottle and 95% alcohol, are available in Cytology Laboratory.

Additional Information

Specify the site brushed and include pertinent clinical data on requisition, ie, admitting diagnosis, age, radiographic findings, bronchoscopic findings, and history of radiation or chemotherapy. Indicate special handling (isolation) required. Indicate suspected infectious disease.
