Collection Instructions

Specimen Type Specimen Collection
Oropharyngeal

Use Woven Swab.

Carefully but firmly guide swab over several areas of inflammation or pus, tonsils (or tonsilar crypes if tonsils have been removed) or posterior pharynx.

Withdraw swab carefully, avoid toughing other surfaces in mouth and insert swab into collection tube.

Break swab shaft at indicated height. Discard top portion of shaft and place bottom portion in specimen collection tube.

Mix thoroughly to expose specimen to nucleic acid stabilizing agents in transport media.

Anorectal

Use Woven Swab.

Insert swab approximately 1.5 to 2 inches (3 to 5 cm) in the rectum.

Withdraw swab carefully, avoid toughing other surfaces and insert swab into collection tube.

Break swab shaft at indicated height. Discard top portion of shaft and place bottom portion in specimen collection tube.

Mix thoroughly to expose specimen to nucleic acid stabilizing agents in transport media.

Endocervical

Requires use of a speculum and two swabs, one for initial cleaning of the cervix to remove excess mucus from the cervical os and surrounding mucosa (this swab is discarded) and a second swab for specimen collection.

Using the Woven swab, remove cervical mucous and discard this swab.

Once cervical mucous is removed, use the Flocked swab to collect the sample.

Withdraw swab carefully, avoid toughing the vaginal mucosa and insert swab into collection tube.

Break swab shaft at indicated height. Discard top portion of shaft and place bottom portion in specimen collection tube.

Mix thoroughly to expose specimen to nucleic acid stabilizing agents in transport media.

Vaginal

Use Woven Swab.

Carefully insert swab approximately 2 inches into the vaginal opening and gently turn/rub the swab against the vaginal wall.

Additional Information

Limitations: Results are dependent upon adequate specimen collection and proper transport conditions. The following are known PCR inhibitors: Replens lubricant, excess mucous. It is important to remove cervical secretions and discharge before obtaining the sample for testing. Also, samples containing greater than 10%(v/v) blood are unacceptable.
