Collection Instructions

Collect in a prewarmed red top tube. Do not use serum separator tubes. Immediately after collection, place tubes in heel warmer or 37° C (warm, not hot) water. Keep sample warm, and allow to clot at 37° C for 90 minutes. Centrifuge at 37° C, if possible (do not use refrigerated centrifuge), and separate serum from cells. Transport serum at ambient (preferred) or refrigerated temperature after removal from cells.
 

Transport

Transport at 37 degrees if within 90 minutes of collection.  After removal from cells, send serum at room temperature (preferred) or refrigerated. 

Rejection Criteria

Gross hemolysis or lipemia.  Serum from SST. Plasma.
 

Specimen Storage and Stability

After separation from cells: Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: Unacceptable.
