Patient Preparation
First morning fasting sample is preferred as Iron levels may decrease later in the day and or with food intake. Have sample drawn before patient is given therapeutic iron or blood transfusion. Iron determinations on patient who have had blood transfusions should be delayed for at least 4 days.
