Collection Instructions
Routine venipuncture. If multiple tests are being drawn, the recommended order of draw is as follows: blood cultures, sodium citrate tubes, gel separator/plain serum plastic tubes, heparin tubes, EDTA tubes. A special tube should be obtained from the laboratory for hematocrits over 55%. Specimens should be transported as soon as possible to the Clinical Laboratory.
Rejection Criteria
Specimens that are clotted, hemolyzed, diluted with IV fluid, received more than 6 hours after collection, insufficient volume, improperly labelled.
Specimen Storage and Stability
For testing delayed longer than 6 hours- centrifuge sample for 15 mins at 1500g and separate plasma. Transfer once-centrifuged, citrate plasma into a plastic tube. Sample should be frozen in a frost-free -20 C freezer. Sample must remain frozen until testing is performed.
