Specimen Type
Direct scrape of lesion.
Collection Instructions
Firmly scrape lesion area with sterile tongue depressor, swab, scalpel. Spread cellular material evenly on glass slide and fix immediately in 95% alcohol or spray with fixative. Cells should be obtained from a freshly unroofed lesion. Label frosted slide with 2 patient identifiers and source of specimen.
Rejection Criteria
Improper labeling or fixation.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Vials may be stored 6 months. Slides may be stored indefinitely after fixation.

Additional Information
Can be requested as stat procedure if active herpes infection is suspected at time of labor prior to vaginal delivery. Specify viral study and body site on requisition.
