Collection Instructions
Nasopharyngeal specimens must be collected with ESwab mini-tip (Blue cap). Reference Influenza-Nasopharyngeal Collection to the left under Patient Collection Information.. Please Note: ProMedica Laboratories draw sites do not collect nasopharyngeal specimens for Influenza. Specimens must be properly labelled with the patient's name, specimen type, hospital identification number if known, time and date of collection, and initials of person collecting specimen.Rejection Criteria
Swab other than nasopharyngeal (NP); Swab collected in other than Eswab (Blue cap) Mini-tip; Swabs collected in M4RT; Specimens that have not been refrigerated; Specimens >72 hours old; Incomplete requisition; Unlabelled specimen
Specimen Storage and Stability
Specimen should be refrigerated if not sent to the lab within 2 hours. Stable 72 hours at 2-8 C.
