Collection Instructions
Specimen must be collected in Gray top tubes and placed immediately on ice. Keep specimen on ice and separate plasma from cells within 15 minutes.
Transport
Transport specimen on ice immediately to laboratory.
Rejection Criteria
Specimen not centrifuged within 15 minutes of draw; Specimen drawn in anticoagulants other than sodium flouride/potassium oxalate; Specimens not drawn on ice; Improper labeling
Specimen Storage and Stability
Specimen should be centrifuged within 15 minutes of draw and analyzed immediately. Plasma samples are stable stored at 15-25 deg C for up to 8 hours or at 2-8 deg C for up to 14 days.

Algorithm
A second lactate level will be reflexed if the first one is abnormal and will be scheduled to be drawn 4 hours after initial lactate’s collection time.
