Collection Instructions
Label slides with 2 patient identifiers and specimen source. Soak nipple with warm saline in cotton or guaze for 10-15 minutes. Gently grip subareolar area and nipple with thumb and forefinger. When liquid appears, allow pea sized drop to accumulate on apex of nipple. Place a slide upon the nipple and slide across quickly. Place slides immediately in 95% alcohol or spray with fixative. Make 4-6 smears as the amount of specimen allows.
Rejection Criteria
Improper fixation or improper labeling of specimens.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Cytolyt vial can be stored for up to 6 months. Slide may be stored indefinitely after fixation.

Patient Preparation
Nipple should be cleaned vigorously to remove loose skin cells.
Additional Information
Include specimen site, pertinent clinical history, i.e., age, LMP, PMP, surgery, exogenous hormones, history of carcinoma, radiation, chemotherapy, or abnormal vaginal bleeding; previous abnormal Paps. Must include age and LMP on request.
