Patient Preparation
A high bulk, red meat-free diet has been recommended for 72 hours prior to collection.
3 days prior to Occult blood collection, patient should not receive >250 mg of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). This can cause false-negatives.
For 7 days prior to Occult blood collection, patient should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including more than one aspirin a day. This can cause false-positives. Other interfering substances that can cause false-positives are: alcohol in excess, corticosteroids, anticoagulants, antimetabolites, cancer chemotheraputic drugs, application of antiseptic preparations containing iodine.
