Lung tissue, transthoracic needle aspirate, bronchopulmonary lavage or induced sputum bronchial brush, tracheal aspirates, body fluids.

Collection Instructions

Specimen should be submitted fresh. Label container with 2 patient identifiers (Full Name and DOB and/or MRN is acceptable),specimen source, and collection date.

Rejection Criteria

Improper labeling or fixation. Inadequate specimen for diagnosis.

Specimen Storage and Stability

Specimen should be transported immediately to Anatomic Pathology on the second floor of the hospital. After hours specimen should be transported imediately to the Phlebotomy Dispatch Unit located on the first floor of the hospital.

Patient Preparation

For induced sputum technique: Gargle with 30 mL 3% NaCl, then inhalation of 35 NaCl mist from an ultrasonic nebulizer for 5-15 minutes.
