Collection Instructions

Specimens must be properly labelled with the patient’s name, specimen type, hospital identification number if known, time and date of collection, and initials of person collecting specimen.

Rejection Criteria

Insufficient volume of specimen; specimen >72 hours old; Specimens that have not been refrigerated; Incomplete requisition; Unlabelled specimen

Specimen Storage and Stability

Transport immediately to North Campus Laboratry. Specimen should be refrigerated if there is any delay in transit to the laboratory. Specimen is stable 72 hours at 2-8 C.

Acceptable Collection Container

Sterile container for washes or aspirates. M4RT transport media for swabs.

Additional Information

Nasal washing in sterile container.

Nasopharyngeal Swab is also an acceptable specimen. Polyester, rayon, foam and cotton nasopharyngeal swabs are acceptable. Add swab specimens to M4RT transport media within one hour of collection.
