Rejection Criteria
Specimen source other than rectal or vaginal; Throat swabs; Specimen not received in appropriate container; Incomplete requisition; Unlabelled specimen; Specimen older than 48 hours.
If an unacceptable specimen is received, the nursing station will be called and another specimen will be requested before disposal.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Room Temperature; <48 hours
Specimen must be delivered within 24 hours of collection to the North Campus Laboratory.
Turn Around Time
Cultures with no beta streptococci will be reported at 2 days. Reports on specimens from which beta streptococci group A has been isolated require a minimum of 48 hours for completion.
