Collection Instructions
A combination lower vaginal and rectal specimen is required. Use swab to first collect vaginal specimen (without use of a speculum) followed by rectal specimen.
Rejection Criteria
Single source specimen; Improperly labeled specimens; Dry swabs; Specimens collected >48 hours.

Turn Around Time
Cultures with no growth will be reported at 2 days. Reports on specimens from which pathogens are isolated will take a minimum of 2 days for completion.

Additional Information
The standard of care for preventing Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease is screening pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation to determine their GBS colonization status. Susceptibility testing of GBS is only performed upon notification to the laboratory that the patient is penicillin allergic.
