Specimens must be labeled with patient name, patient identification number, body site, date and time of collection and initials of person collecting specimen.

Rejection Criteria
Large chunks of tissue; Amputations; Presence of skin/ skin contamination; Specimen not received in appropriate sterile container; Incomplete requisition; Unlabelled specimen.
Specimen Storage and Stability
Send immediately to the laboratory, or refrigerate if transport to the laboratory is to be delayed for more than 1 hour.

NOTE:
Sampling must be performed by Clinician and sent in a sterile container. Amputations and large chunks of tissue will be rejected. CULTURE INCLUDES: Gram stain, and susceptibility when appropriate. If indicated, culture for anaerobes must be ordered separately.

Acceptable Collection Container
Sterile container with non-bacteriostatic saline (ie. no preservative chemicals) to keep specimen moist or place tissue in Port-a-cul transport bottle
Turn Around Time
Cultures with no growth will be reported at 2 days. Reports on specimens from which pathogens are isolated will take a minimum of 2 days for completion.
