Collection Instructions

Clean catch midstream urine should be collected. Refer to Collection of Clean Catch Midstream Urine Specimen Procedure located under Patient Collection Information.

Rejection Criteria

Centrifuge urine; Frozen urine; Non-preservative collection container: Volume <2 mL; Room Temperature > 2 hours; Refrigerated >24 hours; Yellow/Red marble top preservative tube: Volume <7 mL; Room Temperature or Refrigerated > 72 hours; Insufficient quantity; Fecal contamination; Foley catheter tips, urine from a ubag of a catheterized patient and 24 hour urine collections; Improper or Insufficient labeling; Urine collected in a gray top vacutainer (BD) preservative tube.

Specimen Storage and Stability

Sterile non-preservative collection container: Room temperature less than 2 hours; Specimen needs to be Refrigerated (2-8 C) if greater than 2 hours, 24 hours at 2-8 C.
Preservative urine collection tube: 72 hours at 2-25 C

Turn Around Time

Routine – 8 hours; STAT – 40 minutes
