Rejection Criteria

Specimens improperly collected or unlabeled should be rejected.

Specimen Storage and Stability

Room temperature. Specimens should be transported to the North Campus Laboratory ASAP. Specimens, if possible, should be processed and inoculated to isolation media on the same day they are collected from the patient. Specimens should be submitted in a closed container with no preservative added.

Turn Around Time

Fungal smears are reported within 24 hours. Cultures are held 5 days for final report.

Collection Instructions

Include all pertinent information – patient name, hospital identification number, date and time of collection, body site from which specimen was taken, and initials of person collecting specimen.
